Chapter 15

Olivia

I slept like a baby, which was weird, because didn’t I ought to be second-guessing myself like crazy after kissing my boss?

I touched my lips where I could still feel Mario’s kiss, as if permanently etched into my skin. It had been everything I’d thought it would be. Soft, sweet, hot, passionate. And the worst of it was that I wanted more. In fact, I was desperate for his touch.

After he’d kissed me, we’d cuddled under the stars for another hour or so before I’d told him I needed to get home. I knew if I’d stayed, we would have crossed more lines, and even though I’d let him in last night, I didn’t think I was ready to completely let my guard down.

I floated through the weekend on a cloud, doing laundry, so much laundry—now that I had enough clothes to wear, I had to wash them all—and on Sunday went to brunch with Clara. She was relentless in her pursuit of information about my “date” with my boss.

“So, is he a good kisser?” She announced the question as if everyone in the café should hear it.

“Jeez, Clara. Do you mind?”

She giggled, shrugging her shoulders. “Well, is he?”

My face turned beet red, and I couldn’t help the smile that tugged at my lips. “Amazing.”

Clara squealed as the entire café turned to look at her. She waved them off. “Sorry, just excited over here.”

The patrons turned back to their own tables, and I slumped down a little further in my seat. I wasn’t the kind of girl who liked to call attention to herself, whereas Clara lived in the spotlight.

“Okay tell me everything,” she said.

So I did. I told her about the yacht, the dinner, our conversation that cleared up ten years of misunderstanding.

“I knew there was more to the story!” she shrieked.

“You did not.”

“I did. I think I told you to just suck it up and call him.”

“I didn’t have his number.”

“Quit lying, Liv. Yes, you did. You were just too chicken to use it.”

I shrugged. “Still, all signs pointed to him not wanting to see me, so why would I have called him? And sure, he thought about me all these years, but it’s not like I was that hard to find.”

“Guys like Mario Zacapa don’t work that hard for dates, Liv. Plus, he was a little preoccupied making billions in California. The timing hadn’t been right then, but there’s nothing stopping you now.”

“Of course there is. He’s still planning to go back to California, as far as I know. And he’s my boss. If this ends badly—”

“Then you’ll be adults about it and keep working together.”

“Maybe.”

Clara touched my hand. “And what if you don’t give this a chance? What if Mario is someone you could have a future with? Do you want to throw that away because of fear? The chemistry you two still have after ten years is amazing. Why would you ignore that?”

She had a good point, and I didn’t have an answer for her.
